More critically, Tokyo's ecosystem value reaches $169.1 billion and has nurtured 4 unicorn companies, accounting for 80% of Japan's total unicorns.

However, when placed in a global context, Tokyo's unicorn count accounts for only 2% of East Asia's total. In comparison, Beijing and Shanghai rank among the top globally and have far more unicorns than Tokyo. Tokyo's startup ecosystem exhibits an obvious feature of "high quantity, low unicorns": a large number of startups, but a relatively low proportion that can grow into billion-dollar companies. In StartupBlink's observations, many large Japanese companies actively engage in the startup ecosystem through corporate venture capital and partnerships.
